Test your water chemistry before adding anything — Rainfall dilutes chlorine and other chemistry parameters while simultaneously introducing contaminants, organic material, and phosphates from the surrounding environment. Test your complete water chemistry before adding chemicals — don't assume what needs to be added without knowing where your parameters actually landed after the storm.
Shock the pool after the storm — After testing, shock the pool after sunset to restore sanitization levels and address the organic load introduced by rainfall and wind-blown debris. For heavy rain events, expect to need significantly more shock than a standard weekly treatment to restore effective chlorine levels.
Address phosphates — Rainfall is one of the primary ways phosphates enter pool water — from roof runoff, surrounding soil, fertilizer, and organic debris. Test phosphate levels after any significant rain event and treat if elevated. High post-storm phosphates combined with warm DFW temperatures create ideal algae growth conditions that need to be addressed before they become a problem.
Run your pump continuously until chemistry is restored — After a significant storm event, running the pump continuously for 24 to 48 hours keeps water circulating through the filter and helps restore chemistry stability faster than normal operation hours would achieve.
The 48 to 72 hours after a significant storm are the highest risk window for algae development in a DFW pool. The combination of diluted chlorine, elevated phosphates, organic debris load, and warm water creates exactly the conditions algae needs to establish quickly.
Watch your water clarity carefully in the days after a storm. Any cloudiness, green tint, or unusual appearance that develops within 48 to 72 hours of a storm event should be addressed immediately with professional treatment rather than a wait-and-see approach. Algae caught in the very early stages is a fraction of the work and cost of a full bloom that's been developing for several days.
